Why implement carpool lanes and how to control them?

The benefits of carpool lanes

What is a carpool lane?

Carpool lanes are, as the name implies, lanes that are reserved solely for carpooling, it means vehicles with 2 or more occupants.

Who can use these carpool lanes?

These lanes, located on the far left side of the roadway, will allow authorized vehicles to take advantage of a less congested and therefore faster lane. The authorized vehicles are :

  • Light vehicles with two or more occupants
  • Two-wheelers with two people
  • Vehicles with a Crit’air zero emission sticker
  • Buses
  • Cabs

What is the purpose of carpool lanes?

Thanks to carpooling, it is possible to increase the number of people transported without increasing the number of vehicles on our roads. This has the following benefits:

  • Reduce CO² emissions
  • Reduce noise pollution
  • Improve traffic flow
  • Develop green mobility
  • Limit the transportation budget

In France, we already have 24km of dedicated carpooling lanes, but how are they controlled?

Control of carpool lanes

To control these lanes, Pryntec has developed a solution for counting the number of occupants in the vehicles.

This solution is capable of counting passengers in the front and back of a vehicle and detecting violations. It is already in regular use in the cities of Grenoble and Lyon.

The Pryntec solution performs even in difficult weather conditions and up to 130km/h. According to the Cerema, “this is the best performance known to date” (July 2021).
